One of my favorite memories with Michele is meeting her family's dog, Pepper. Of course, the memory is not about Pepper (the wonderful creature that she is), at least not primarily about that. It's about what that meeting represented. It's about feeling at home when you're five thousand miles away from your family. It's about how Michele, her lab, her family--and Pepper!--made me feel welcomed, even though they knew me just for a couple of weeks. As Maya Angelou famously never said, people may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel. I sure won't.
